Obituary for Sr. Elizabeth Ann O'Bryan, CSJ

Latham - Sister Elizabeth Ann O’Bryan, CSJ, 89, died Saturday, April 9, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. She had been a Sister of St. Joseph of Carondelet for the past 67 years.

Sister Elizabeth, the former Ann Therese O’Bryan, was born on December 18, 1926 in Troy, NY, daughter of the late James and Mary Fitzgerald O’Bryan. After graduating from Catholic Central High School, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Troy on March 19, 1949 and professed final vows on August 15, 1956. Sister Elizabeth received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from The College of Saint Rose and taught for 41 years in schools of the Albany Diocese in Hudson, Herkimer, Amsterdam, Hudson Falls, Troy and Wyantskill. In addition, she served many years as a driver at St. Joseph’s Provincial House.

Sister Elizabeth Ann was a prayerful woman, a loving aunt and a dedicated Sister of St. Joseph. True to her Irish heritage, she was devoted to St. Patrick and was so proud to have been raised in St. Patrick’s Parish, Troy. Sister Elizabeth loved animals and had a soft spot especially for dogs and cats, showcased in her later years by an eclectic collection of stuffed animals. To Sister Elizabeth, the only thing better than joining friends to play cards or bingo was to take a ride that concluded with a stop for chocolate or peanut butter ice cream and Diet-Pepsi. Sister Elizabeth leaves us a legacy of loyalty to faith, family and friends, and she will be dearly missed.

Sister Elizabeth is survived by several beloved nieces and nephews and their families, many friends and the Sisters of St. Joseph. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by five brothers: Henry, John, Joseph, Francis and Gerald O’Bryan; and three sisters: Alice and Norine O’Bryan and Margaret Bush.

Sister Elizabeth’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, April 12, at 10:30 a.m. in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Provincial House, Latham. Calling hours will be held at the Provincial House on Monday, April 11, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. with the wake service at 7:00 p.m. Contributions in Sister Elizabeth’s name may be made to the Development Office of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 385 Watervliet-Shaker Rd., Latham, NY 12110.
