Obituary for Paul R. VanAlstyne Sr.

LATHAM – Paul R. VanAlstyne, Sr., 85, died on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at the Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s surrounded by his loving family.

Paul was born in Albany, NY on October 25, 1931 and was the son of the late Ira C. and Louise H. (McGann) VanAlstyne.

He was raised and resided in Watervliet for many years before moving to Latham. A graduate of the LaSalle Institute in Troy and the Albany Business College, he had served in the Naval Reserve for more than 20 years, with the “SeaBees”, before his retirement in 1991. Paul was employed by the John A. Manning Paper Company (Lydall-Manning) in Green Island from where he retired following a career of over 50 years .

Paul was a communicant of St. Ambrose Church in Latham and enjoyed membership in the Colonie Lodge of Elks and the Navy SeaBee Veterans of America.

In retirement Paul enjoyed his home, the times spent with his family in Myrtle Beach, SC and camping at Hampton Beach, NH. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled him with pride.

He was the beloved husband of Marie A. (Mulready) VanAlstyne; loving father of Paul (Amy Herzog) VanAlstyne, Jr. of Clifton Park, NY, Mark (Rhonda) VanAlstyne of Melrose, John (Diane) VanAlstyne of Colonie and Stephen (Lynn) VanAlstyne of Colonie; proud grandfather of Janel (John) Lawrence, John Michael VanAlstyne, Lindsey (Sean) Barton, Christopher, Kyle, Kayla, Kelsey, Danielle and Carly VanAlstyne; cherished great-grandfather of Madison and Piper Lawrence; brother of the late William VanAlstyne; brother-in-law of Claire VanAlstyne of Westerlo and John T. Mulready of Glenville. Several nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral on Monday at 10 AM from the Bowen & Parker Brothers Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham and at 11 AM in St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road, Latham, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Leo Markert. Rite of committal and interment, with military honors, will follow at 1 PM in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends are invited and may also visit with Paul’s family on Sunday from 4 until 7 PM at the funeral home.
