Obituary for William L. Dyer

WATERVLIET, NY – William L. “Bill” Dyer, 93, passed unexpectedly from this life on Thursday, November 10, 2016.

Born in Troy, NY on February 13, 1923, Bill was the son of the late Edward and Grace (Kearns) Dyer.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 36 years, Genevieve (DelSignore) Dyer; his first wife, Peggy (James) Dyer; his son, Daniel Dyer and his sister, Grace Stratton.

Bill was a 1941 graduate of the LaSalle Institute in Troy. A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps on December 9, 1942 and was honorably discharged on February 24, 1946. Bill served as a sergeant in the 8th Air Force, 555th Fighter Squadron for three years in England. For his service he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal, the American Service Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

Bill was employed by the Norton Company in Watervliet, now the St. Gobain Corporation, for 41 years. He retired in 1982 as supervisor in the production control department.

Following his retirement, Bill and his wife Genevieve, enjoyed traveling and visited Bermuda, London, England, South Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Hawaii and Acapulco, Mexico. For 28 years, Bill, his wife Gen and their family enjoyed spending the summer months at Sacandaga Lake.

Bill was a past member of the Troy Lodge of Elks, the Norton Foremen’s Association and the Norton Bowling League. He was a big fan of the N.Y. Yankees, Giants and the Fighting Irish of the University of Notre Dame.

He was a communicant of the former Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Watervliet, now the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish where he once served as a lector and was a member of the Holy Name Society.

He is survived by his granddaughter, Jamie Dyer of California; his stepdaughter and her husband, Mary Frances and Earl Hill of Watervliet; his stepson and his wife, James and Janice DelSignore of Florida; his grandchildren, Sarah Hill, Wayne and Thomas Delligan; his sister-in-law, Beatrice DeLucia of Watervliet as well as several nieces and nephews.

His funeral will be held on Wednesday at 9:45AM from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway and at 10:30 AM in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church, 24th Street and 7th Avenue, Watervliet, where the funeral Mass will be celebrated by the Reverend Donald Rutherford. The rite of committal and interment, with military honors, will follow, at 12:30 PM, in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Bill’s family on Tuesday, from 4 until 7 PM, at the funeral home.
