Obituary for Nicholas "Nick" Zavisky

WATERVLIET – Nicholas Zavisky passed into eternal life on Friday, December 2, 2016.
Son of the late Leo and Mary Kopsa Zavisky, Nicholas was born in Watervliet on January 31, 1921.

He is survived by his loving sister Dorothy Zavisky and cousins, Barbara M Zavisky and Michael P. Zavisky both of Watervliet, Ann Marie (Charles) Bowman of Getzville, NY and cousins in Canada and Ukraine. He was pre-deceased by his brother, Joseph who was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in the Second World War.

Nicholas was a life-long resident of Watervliet and proudly served in the Army Air Force in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of operations where he received the Presidential Unit Citation. Nicholas graduated from the Troy Business College and was a 1947 graduate of Siena College. His career spanned 35 years in the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance and Department of Transportation from where he retired in 1982 as director of the statewide Mass Transportation Operation Assistance Program. He also served for many years as a director of the SEFCU Credit Union.
To the scores of friends Nick was privileged to know, he would say “thanks for the good times”, He took great pleasure with his friends in playing golf, was an avid reader, loved to travel, garden and play cards. His cheerful personality, sense of humor and optimism will be missed by all who knew him.
Nicholas was a member of the Ukrainian American Citizens Club and was a communicant of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet where he had served as an usher and participated in many of the church activities.
A special thank you is offered to the Eddy Senior Housing Staff for the care and kindness shown to Nicholas and his family.

The funeral for Nicholas will be held on Tuesday and will begin at 10:30 AM from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and then will proceed to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet where at 11 AM the funeral liturgy will be offered by the Reverend Mikhail Myschuk, pastor. Rite of committal and interment will follow in St. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Waterford. Friends are invited and may also visit with the Zavisky family on Monday from 3 until 6 PM at the funeral home where the Panakhyda service will be held at 5:30 PM.

Memorial donations, if desired, may be made to St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 2410 Fourth Avenue, Watervliet, NY 12189 in memory of Nicholas Zavisky.
