Obituary for John B. Ebenhoch Sr.

John B.  Ebenhoch Sr.
WATERVLIET – John B. Ebenhoch, Sr., 79, died suddenly Friday, March 31, 2017 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy. Born in Columbus, OH on December 30, 1937, he was the son of the late Arthur and Georgia McGinness Ebenhoch. John graduated from Troy High School.
He was employed briefly by Niagara Mohawk, Behr-Manning and the Ford Motor Company. In September, 1971, John was sworn in to the Watervliet Fire Department. He was promoted to Captain in 1975 and Battalion Chief in 1980. He was a past president of the Watervliet United Fire Firefighters Association Local 590. He retired after 24 years of service to the City of Watervliet in 1996. He was also a school bus driver for the North Colonie School District for 44 years before retiring in 2015.
He was a member of the Watervliet AOH where he served as a treasurer and house chairman. In 1992, he was awarded “Hibernian of the Year”. He was a life member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks #1500 and was a member of the Dart League, Watervliet Ukrainian Club Dart League and was a social member of the Watervliet VFW. He was a member of the "Over the Hill Gang", attending many Watervliet High School sporting events. He enjoyed 27 cruises with his wife Gail, Saturday dinners at Verdile’s Restaurant, golf and traveling.
He is the beloved husband of 10 years of Gail A. Gardner Ebenhoch and the late Evelyn A. Smith Ebenhoch; devoted father of John B. (Meg) Ebenhoch, Jr. of Watervliet, Colleen M. Gaunay of Brunswick, Cathleen M. (James) McGovern of Latham and James B. (Michele) Ebenhoch of Fairport, NY; devoted step-dad to Gail Gardner of Green Island, Joseph (Alison) Gardner of Medusa, NY, Patrick (Suzanne) Gardner of Troy and Kellie Connelly of Altamont; brother of Margaret Cleary, Donald Ebenhoch and Carolyn Lighthizer; proud grandfather of Thomas, Patrick and Bridget Ebenhoch, Eric and Ashley Gaunay, Anthony Bucci and Riley McGovern, Isabelle, Alyssa and Ryan Ebenhoch, Stuart and Kelsey Gardner, Jennifer and Amanda Powers, Casey (Robert) Feldman and Katie Connelly. Also survived by 12 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be Tuesday at 9:15 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 10:00 am at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Watervliet. Interment St. Nicholas Cemetery, Maplewood. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4-7 pm.
