Obituary for George M. Roe

George M. Roe
WATERVLIET – George M. Roe, “Georgie”, 54, died unexpectantly Thursday, April 20, 2017 at his home. Born in Troy on January 29, 1963, he is the beloved son and “prince” of Eleanore “Rusty” Berger Roe of Latham and the late George M. Roe.
George grew up at the Watervliet Civic Center alongside his dad. He was a 1981 graduate of Shaker High School and was a member of the 1979-80 and 1980-81 Suburban Council championship basketball teams coached by Julius Girmindl. He mentored his two nieces, Jessica and Rachel in basketball and passed along the “Roe” tradition and passion for the sport. He was a member of the Capital District Board of Women’s Basketball Officials (CDBWBO).
He graduated from Hudson Valley Community College, Brockport State University and Siena College where he received his BS degree in accounting.
George was employed by Tech Valley Printing in Watervliet for 10 years. He was currently with the NYS Workers Compensation Board since 2008 as an accountant.
George was a longtime and dedicated member of the Van Schaick Island Country Club in Cohoes and loved the game of golf. He won two club championships at Van Schaick and played with his dad in Ireland and in Florida. He later helped organize the George Roe Memorial Tournament for the Watervliet Civic Center where he was a board member.
George had a zest for life and was always happy. He loved music, singing, and going to concerts with his two nieces. He often was mistaken for Larry Bird around the Capital District.
In addition to his mother Rusty, he is the loving brother of Lynn (Tom) Csakany of Schenectady; proud uncle of Jessica Csakany (Eric Van Skiver) his goddaughter and Rachel Csakany; godson of Kathy (Dick) Sullivan of Sandwich, MA and Joseph Zawistowski of Watervliet. He is also survived by several cousins, extended family and friends and his furry companions, Gus, Willow and Jack.
The funeral service will be Wednesday at 10 am at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at the funeral home on Tuesday from 4-7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Watervliet Civic Center, PO Box 164, Watervliet, NY 12189
