Obituary for Agatha Niki Huban (Papoulis)

Latham – Agatha Niki Huban, 87, passed away Friday morning, June 23, 2017. Born in Nafpaktos, Greece on December 27, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Antonios and Spyridoula (Vergoulis) Papoulis.
Niki, as she was known, was raised in western Greece. Her family never had much, but they enjoyed the simple things and lived with love and laughter. They often found themselves fleeing into the mountains to get away from the chaos the war brought along. During this time Niki once found herself on a hillside defending her favorite tree from destruction by the occupying military. She risked her life and saved what is now the only tree still standing on the hillside; the “Agatha Niki Tree”.
Niki later moved to the USA and her genuine, caring nature and strong faith came with her. She always had a soft spot for both children and the elderly, and loved her Church. This was evident in her being a Sunday School teacher and her over six decades of service in The Ladies Philoptochos Society serving on the Sunshine Committee with which she would visit and spend time with the sick and elderly. Niki crocheted hundreds of afghans throughout her life by blanketing the children big and small within her community, and donated many of them to the Ronald McDonald House. She was a talented seamstress and her skills with hooks and fabric were only matched by her culinary skills. She was known for her delectable Greek cuisine, including her avgolemeno soup, spanakopita, baklava and rice pudding.
Niki is survived by her loving children; Nicholas A. (Wendy) Huban of Latham, and Florence Huban (Thomas) Suraci of Loudonville, her grandchildren; EJ Huban, Nicoletta Huban, Jonathan Matla, and Peter Matla, her brother; George (Magda) Papoulis of Athens, Greece, her sister-in-law; Leona Huban (late Mike) Bozza of Charlotte, NC, and by several adored nieces, nephews and Godchildren whom were also close to her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis Huban, who passed in 1980, and by her siblings; Stravroula (late Thanasi) Raptis, and John Papoulis, whose wife Dena survives.
A funeral service will be held at St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church on Thursday, June 29 at 10 AM. Interment will follow in St. Basil's Cemetery, Maplewood. Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 28 from 4 until 7 at Bowen and Parker Bros. Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham, with the Trisagion Memorial Service at the conclusion of the evening. Those who have an afghan by Niki are welcome to snip a piece of fringe and bring it to calling hours and leave in a basket beside her. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Niki in a special way may make a donation to the St. Basil Greek Orthodox Church, 909 River Street, Troy, NY 12180.
