Obituary for Nadia M. Haitko

MAPLEWOOD – Nadia M. Haitko, 83, died peacefully on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany. Born in Maplewood on January 12, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Panko and Joanna Spiak Haitko.
Nadia was a graduate of St. Nicholas Ukrainian School in Watervliet and a 1951 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy. She later graduated from the College of St. Rose in Albany with a bachelor’s degree in Education and received her master’s degree from Albany State Teachers College.
Retired from the East Greenbush Central School District, Nadia taught 3-5th grades there. She was also a guidance counselor in the Burnt Hills/Ballston Lake School District, and taught her first years in Troy P.S. 10. She was a member of the East Greenbush Teacher’s Association.
Nadia was a member of the Watervliet Columbiettes and served as treasurer and was an associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph in Latham. She volunteered for various cultural and civic organizations in the Capital District.
She had travelled extensively, including group tours to the Maine coast, Scotland, and Russia. She enjoyed opera, ballet, and had a deep love of reading.
She is the beloved sister of Mary Cerulli of Troy, John Haytko of Maplewood, Dorothy (Emmett) Marinucci of Cohoes, Jean Murphy of Fairport, NY and Joel Haitko of Providence, RI; sister in law of George Giroux of Cohoes; dear aunt of Donna (David) Lawrence of Guilderland, Mary Beth (C.R.) Gilbert of Henrietta, NY, Margaret (David) Bell of Troy, Anne Marie (Mark) Strivings and Justine (Laurence) Gilbert both of Rochester, NY. She is also survived by several grandnieces, grandnephews, great grandnieces and great grandnephews.
She was predeceased by siblings Anna Fengler, Rose Joyes, Tillie Andrews, Julia Barbuto, Steven Hayko, Madelean Toma, Olga Dobromilsky, Justine Giroux, Elizabeth and Barbara Haitko.
The family wishes to thank the staffs of Atria Guilderland and St. Peter’s ICU for their loving care of Nadia.
The funeral Mass will be Friday at 11 am at St. Ambrose Church, 347 Old Loudon Road in Latham. Relatives and friends are invited and may call at St. Ambrose Church on Friday prior to the mass from 10-11 am. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Maplewood.
