Obituary for Helen S. Noonan (Simmons)

Watervliet – Helen S. Noonan passed away peacefully at her home in Watervliet on Friday, December 1, 2017 with her family by her side.
Born in Kinderhook, she was the daughter of the late Harrison and Eilzabeth Golden Simmons. She grew up and lived in Chatham for many years and graduated from Chatham High School. Following high school graduation she attended SUNY New Paltz and Mildred Elley Business School. Helen worked as a legal secretary in both Chatham and Albany. She worked for the State of New York in the Legislature, Assembly, Senate, and eventually retired from the Executive Chamber. In her retirement she traveled to Alaska, Greece, the Carribbean, and took vacations with her daughters. Helen was a member of the Dutch Reformed Church in Chatham and the Jermain Memorial Presbyterian Church in Watervliet, where she served as Deacon, Elder, and Treasurer of the Jermain Women Association. Helen had a love for art and was a talented artist herself.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband, John J. Noonan and her son-in-law Dennis M. Bird. She is survived by her two daughters; Elizabeth N. Bird, and Diane M. Noonan Donnelly, her grandchildren; Katelyn (David) Schwenker, Jonathan (Lindsey) Bird, Ryan, Brandon, Joshua, and Taylor Donnelly, and by several great-grandchildren. She was a loving, caring, and devoted mother and grandmother who always found ways to brighten the lives of those around her.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday, December 5, 2017, at 1 PM at the Jermain Memorial Presbyterian Church, 601 5th Ave., Watervliet. Donations in Helen’s memory may be made to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204.
