Obituary for Sonia Hachigian (Stepanian)

SCHENECTADY - Sonia Stepanian Hachigian, age 86, formerly of Niskayuna, NY, passed away at Kingsway Arms Nursing Center in Schenectady, NY on December 3, 2017.

Born in Olean, NY, on December 12, 1930, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Berdjouhie Stepanian.

Sonia graduated from Olean High School in 1948 and earned her Bachelor's and Master's degree from the State University of New York at Albany in 1952 and 1953.

She was employed by the former Draper High School as a business teacher from 1953 to 1986. During her teaching career, she served as advisor to the Future Business Leaders of America Club and the National Business Honor Society. She was also auditor of Student Clubs Treasurer's books, and Business Department Chairman.

As a member of St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church in Watervliet, she, along with her late husband Sarkis, belonged to the former Mr. and Mrs. Club. She was also a member of The Women's Guild, and served as chairman in 1993 and 1994. In addition, she was a member of The Daughters of Vartan, serving as treasurer for many terms. Together with her husband, she participated in many church and lodge activities.

Survivors include a sister, Isabel Krempa; two nephews, Steven and Paul (Diane) Krempa, all of Schenectady, and several other cousins, nephews, and nieces.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 7, at 10:00 AM at St. Peter Armenian Apostolic Church, 100 Troy-Schenectady Road, Watervliet, with Reverend Father Stepanos Doudoukjian officiating. Interment will be at Memory Gardens in Colonie, NY. There will be no public calling hours.
