Obituary for John W. Hotaling

POESTENKILL – John W. Hotaling, 73, formerly of Watervliet, died Thursday, December 28, 2017 at the Community Hospice Inn at St. Peter’s Hospital. Born in Albany on November 20, 1944, he was the son of the late Harold and Mary MacDonald Hotaling.
John was raised in Latham and graduated from Shaker High School in 1962. He was a US Air Force veteran of the Vietnam era serving from 1962-66 in France and Germany.
He was employed at the Watervliet Arsenal as a machinist and later as a production planner for 27 years before retiring in 1994. He was a draftsman for the “Bunker Buster” that was used during the Gulf War and received a Letter of Accomodation from then Secretary of Defense, George Cheney.
John was a member of the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Cobleskill since 2015. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping and loved watching baseball especially the NY Yankees. His greatest joy in life came in watching his children and grandchildren participating in sporting and school events.
He was the beloved husband of the late Bette Yannick Hotaling who died in 2013; loving father of Michael (Lori) Hotaling of Clifton Park, Kristin (Tom) Eury of Howe’s Cave, Scott (Heather) Wagers of Folsom, CA, Jeff (late Valerie) Hotaling of Averill Park and Tiffany (Scott) O’Neill of Colonie; brother of Joyce (Dave) Penk, Robert (Joanne) Hotaling, Karen Hotaling and the late David and William Hotaling. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 1 great granddaughter and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Tuesday from 4-7 pm. John’s ashes will be entombed at the Gerald BH Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery on Wednesday at 11 am.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Fraternal Order of the Eagles, 87 Legion Drive, Cobleskill, NY 12043 to assist with their good deed.
