Obituary for Edward Stanley "Ed" Barnes Jr.

WATERVLIET – On July 18, 2018 after 95 years of living, Edward Stanley (“Ed”) Barnes, Jr., finished his life’s journey with loving family members at his side. His gentle ways, his humor, his integrity, his intelligence and appreciation of life’s bounty will always be remembered.
Born in Latham, the son of Edward S. Barnes and Helen Riedy, and raised in North Albany and Watervliet, he graduated from Cathedral Academy in Albany in 1940. He played basketball, baseball and golf for Cathedral. In 1942 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and rose to the rank of Signalman 1st Class, serving on USS LCI #196 and USS Caseo. He participated in the Invasions of Sicily, Salerno, Anzio, Southern France and the Island of Elba. He was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1946 and enrolled in Siena College, where he played on the golf team. He graduated from Siena in 1950 with a BA in Economics. He worked for the United Traction Company in Albany from 1952 to 1972, and rose to the position of President of the Company. He oversaw the transition of the United Traction Company to the Capital District Transit Authority. He worked for the Albany County Department of Social Services as the Accounting Budget Analyst from 1973 until his retirement in 1990.
Following his return from the war, he played Semi-Professional baseball with the Maplewood Legion Baseball Club and the Marty Dwyer All Stars. He met the love of his life, Paulina (“Pinky”) Jupin, at a Maplewood Legion game in Green Island and from that time on they were never separated. They married in 1948 at Sacred Heart Church in North Albany and were married for over 56 years before Paulina’s untimely passing in 2005.
In the summer of 1947, while working as a steel worker at GE in Schenectady as a summer job during college, the scaffolding malfunctioned and he fell 4 stories and fractured his pelvic bone and shattered his right elbow. As a result of his elbow injury, he could never again straighten his right arm completely. Despite his arm limitation, he was able to resume golfing. He joined the Van Schaick Island Country Club in 1951 (at the time of his death he was the longest living male member of the Club) and won the Club Championship in 1956, 1965, 1967 and in 1979 at the age of 57. When he won the Championship in 1979 (his caddie was his wife Paulina), he was the oldest player ever to play in the Club Championship finals, defeating an opponent who was a member of the Florida State golf team and was 21 years old, the youngest player ever to play in the Club Championship finals! He represented Van Schaick in many ENYGA events throughout the State. He had 10 holes-in-one, the last one coming at the age of 91.
He and Paulina were blessed with, and survived by, 4 sons: Gregory (Christine) of San Diego, CA, Edward (Ellen) of Albany, Byron (Char) of Sharon, CT, and Joseph of Rochester, NY. He is survived by his brother William (Carole) of Chesterfield, VA. He was predeceased by his brother Robert (Frances) of Troy and Father John (“Jack”) Barnes, a priest of the La Salette Missionaries, who passed away prematurely while on assignment at the Vatican in Rome. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren, along with several nieces and nephews. Ed was a long time communicant at St. Brigid’s Parish in Port Schuyler and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in uptown Watervliet.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. at the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 Third Avenue, Watervliet (Rt. 32 South of Arsenal). A Mass of Christian burial will take place on Saturday at 9:30 am at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 2416 7th Avenue, Watervliet. An entombment will follow at the mausoleum at St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the La Salette Missionaries in his name would be appreciated by the family.
