Obituary for Vladimir "Walter" Nystoriak

COHOES – Walter Nystoriak, 89, a life-long resident of Cohoes, died on Friday, March 10, 2017 at Samaritan Hospital in Troy following a brief illness.

Born in Cohoes on June 2, 1927, Walter was the son of the late Theodore and Julia Haschytz Nystoriak. He was raised and educated in Cohoes and was employed by the NYS Department of Labor from 1945 until his enlistment into the Army in 1950. He served his country from 1950 to 1952 during the Korean War, in Korea, and for his service was awarded the Korean Service Medal, U.N. Service Medal and the American Occupation Medal. At the conclusion of his enlistment, Walter returned home to Cohoes and to his job with the State. At the time of his retirement in 1983, he had been employed for a total of 38 years with the Labor Department and for one year with the Department of Corrections at Auburn State Prison.

Walter was a member of St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church in Maplewood, the Watervliet “R” Club (FROC), Maplewood American Legion Post #1615 and the Cohoes Loyal Order of Moose #1332. Walter enjoyed golf, bowling and fishing. He founded the Department of Labor Golf League, in 1958, at the former Stanford Golf Course. Later, the league relocated to the Western Turnpike Golf Course in Guilderland. He enjoyed league bowling with the “R” Club in Watervliet and the Maplewood Volunteer Fire Department and fishing at Saratoga Lake.

Walter was the dear brother of Metro Nystoriak and Eva Nystoriak both of Cohoes, Sophie (late George) Zonitch of Las Vegas, NV and the late Michael (late Pauline) Nystoriak, late Joseph Nystoriak and late Tessie Nystoriak. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Walter’s funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9 AM from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet and at 9:30 AM in St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church in Maplewood where the Funeral Service will be celebrated by Very Reverend Father Peter Olsen and the Very Reverend Father Stephen Mack, pastor of St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Auburn, NY. Interment will take place in the spring in St. Basil’s Cemetery, Maplewood. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Walter’s family on Monday from 5 until 7 PM at the funeral home during which time the Parastas service will be held at 6:30 o’clock. Contributions may be made to St. Basil’s Russian Orthodox Church, Restoration Fund, 6 Lansing Avenue, Watervliet, NY 12189 in memory of Walter Nystoriak.
