Obituary for Carl F. Alesio

SCHENECTADY – Carl F. Alesio, 86, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Ellis Hospital surrounded by his family.

Carl, the son of the late Alexander and Julia (DiCarlo) Alesio, was born in Schenectady on January 2, 1931. He was raised and educated in Schenectady and resided there for much of his life.

After High School, Carl enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country overseas aboard the USS Haynsworth (DD 700) during the Korean War. Carl was honorably discharged in 1950 and returned to Schenectady to begin employment in the auto body industry. Eventually, he opened Carl’s Garage and Auto Body Shop on Duane Avenue in Schenectady, a business he operated for 58 years before his retirement.

Carl was a member of St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church in Troy; was a member and past president of AHEPA; was a board member of the Schenectady VFW Post; and was a member of the Rotterdam Lodge of Elks.

He appreciated watching western movies, sailing out of the Westport Marina on Lake Champlain, loved football, an avid New England Patriots fan, listening to the radio and enjoying a good cigar. He was knowledgeable about World War II and in his earlier years, was considered a very good dancer. Carl enjoyed nothing more than the times spent at home with his family and his grandchildren were a great source of pride for him.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Helen Asimakis (Karamanlis) Alesio; his step children, Julie McCann (Edward) of Clifton Park, Harry Karamanlis of Troy, John Karamanlis (Michelle) of Urbandale, Iowa, Catherine Madcharo (Eric) of Urbandale, Iowa; his grandchildren, Megan, Michael, Matthew, Zachary, Amelia and Nicholas; his brother, Bruce Ruszczyk; sister-in-law, Miranda Polemeropoulos and brother-in-law, Van Asimakis. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many dear and special friends.

A heartfelt thank you is extended to the doctors, nurses and staff of the Ellis Hospital Intensive Care Unit for the dedicated and wonderful care given to Carl and for the support offered to his family during his stay.

Carl’s funeral will be held on Friday, December 29, 2017 at 8 am from the Bowen & Parker Brothers Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road in Latham and at 9 am in St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church, Troy where the Reverend Presbyter Emmanuel E. Mantzouris will officiate. Interment will follow in Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Carl’s family at the funeral home on Thursday, December 28, 2017 from 4 until 7 pm during which time the Trisagion Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 pm.

For those wishing to remember Carl in a special way, in lieu of flowers his family suggests a donation be made to St. Basil’s Greek Orthodox Church, 909 River Street, Troy, NY 12180 in his memory.
