Obituary for Stephen William Halayko

WATERVLIET – God has called his good and faithful servant of 95 years, Stephen William Halayko home to be by side on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2017. Steve was born in Maplewood to Julia (Goydon) and William Halayko.
Steve spent most of his life in Watervliet with his loving wife, partner and faithful servant in Christ, Antoinette “Toni” (Bania) Halayko. Together they raised 5 children, William (Patricia), Thomas (Connie), Paula (Barry) Lathrop, MaryAnn “Mame” (Dennis) Kling and Jay (Mary Beth). Steve was a great influence over his grandchildren teaching them integrity, an incredible work ethic and kindness: Lance, Alex (Francesca), Kaylyn (Cindy), Brendan (Beth), Joshua Lathrop (Heather), Ashlee Lathrop, Lisa Alfieri (Chris), Paul Gill (Wilma), and the Honorable Jennifer Sober (Ken), all will miss him dearly. He is also survived by 15 great grandchildren, all of whom basked in Steve’s love.
Steve was a Purple Heart recipient for his service to his country in WWII, landing on the beaches of Normandy on D Day. In 1945, he married Antoinette and they began their personal and professional 72 year journey. They opened Schuyler Bakery in Watervliet in 1954. Steve left for 10 years to become head baker for Albany County and then Steve spent most of his professional life baking for the business he and Toni started and loved, Schuyler Bakery, retiring at the age of 90.
Steve and Antoinette were devoted to St. Brigid and Immaculate Heart of Mary churches. The couple worked hard and traveled together, spending 30 winters with their friends in Florida. Steve also was an avid golfer, playing every week with his dear friend, Marty DiBiase, scoring 3 holes in one in his lifetime. Steve also greatly enjoyed his Friday night poker games with Charlie Jesseo, Flo and Harry Harbour and the Harbour family.
Steve was also predeceased by his brothers, Michael, John, Harry and sister Ann Van Sleet.
The family is grateful for the care and support of Jaime Borge, RN from Community Hospice.
The funeral mass will be Thursday at 2:00 pm at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 2416 7th Avenue, Watervliet with Rev. Donald Rutherford officiating.
