Obituary for John M. Haytko

MAPLEWOOD – John M. Haytko, 91, died unexpectedly on Saturday, January 06, 2018 at his home.

Born at home in Maplewood on August 22, 1926, John was the son of the late Panko and Joanna (Spiak) Haitko. A life-long resident of Maplewood, John was a 1944 graduate of Catholic Central High School in Troy. He enlisted in the U. S. Army in 1944 and served his country in the Pacific Theater in both the Philippines and Japan. He was awarded the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, Philippines Liberation Ribbon, Army of Occupation Medal, World War II Victory Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned home to Maplewood.

John was initially employed as a foundry worker and as a seaman with Mobil Oil. He was employed by the Allegheny Ludlum Steel Company from 1953 until 1960 and lastly worked as a union construction worker with Local 452 in Troy from where he retired in 1986.

John was a member of the Maplewood American Legion Post # 1615, Maplewood Conservation Club and had served as a firefighter with the Maplewood Volunteer Fire Company for more than 60 years. He was a life-long member of St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church in Watervliet.

John was pre-deceased by his siblings; Anna Fengler, Rose Joyes, Tillie Andrews, Julia Barbuto, Steven Haytko, Magdelean Toma, Olga Dobromilsky, Justine Giroux, Elizabeth, Barbara and Nadia Haitko.

He is survived by his sisters, Mary Cerulli of Troy, Dorothy (Emmett) Marinucci of Cohoes, Jean Murphy of Fairport, NY and Joel Haitko of Providence, RI; brother -in-law, George Giroux of Cohoes; nieces, Donna (David) Lawrence of Guilderland, Mary Beth (C.R.) Gilbert of Henrietta, NY, Margaret (David) Bell of Troy, Anne Marie (Mark) Strivings and Justine (Laurence) Gilbert both of Rochester. He is also survived by several grand-nieces, grand-nephews, great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews.

Funeral from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Saturday at 10:30 am and at 11 am in St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, Watervliet where the Reverend Mikhail Myschuk will officiate. Interment will follow in St. Nicholas Cemetery in Maplewood. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with John’s family on Saturday, prior to the service, from 9:30 am until 10:30 am.
