Obituary for Stephen Hawkins

New Lebanon – Stephen Hawkins, intermittent lifelong resident of New Lebanon, NY, died April 16th at the age of 83.
After graduating from Darrow School, he served in the Marines for three years. He then married Peggy Victoria of New Lebanon and NYC. Together they moved south where he received his Bachelor’s degree in Ancient History from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA. After graduation he taught history at Choate School in Wallingford, CT for 8 years. Steve was a house master and a soccer, hockey, and golf coach.
The Hawkins family moved back to New Lebanon in 1970. He and his wife became members of the Lebanon Valley Protective Association, serving on the ambulance for many years. Steve became the evening photographer for the Berkshire Eagle for ten years.
Steve is survived by his wife and their 4 children; Vicki (John) Burgess of New Lebanon, Jonathan Hawkins of Burlington, VT, Alexander (Christine) Hawkins of Mesa, AZ, and William Hawkins of Lahaina, HI, as well as by five grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held Saturday, April 21, from 4 until 6 PM at Hall and Higgins Funeral Home, 457 NY Route 43, Stephentown. Interment will take place in Cemetery of the Evergreens at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Steve in a special way may consider a donation to the Lebanon Valley Protective Association, PO Box 162, New Lebanon, NY 12125.
