Obituary for Varian Aileen "Val" Senick (Austin)

Varian Aileen "Val" Senick (Austin)
WATERVLIET - Varian (Val) Aileen Senick, aged 83 and a longtime resident of the Capital District, died peacefully at Evergreen Commons Nursing Center in East Greenbush, NY on Sunday, May 6, 2018, with her son John and daughter-in-law Maira by her side after a brief struggle with cancer.
Varian was born June 14, 1934, in Belleville, NY, the daughter of John C. Austin and Alma E. Flynn. She spent many of her childhood years in Potsdam, NY after her family relocated there.
Varian loved the outdoors, and enjoyed bike riding, fishing and scenic drives, particularly thru the Adirondacks. Her visits to her sister Cathy's camp in Canada were always an exciting annual summer highlight. She cherished her early morning walks along the beach in Wildwood, NJ during vacations.
Varian was a Recreational Aid for the Lansingburgh School District for 27 years and Manager of the Colonial Restaurant in Lansingburgh for 15 years. Countless students and customers fondly kept in touch with her throughout the years. She also volunteered for many years at the Waterford Harbor Visitor Center, lending assistance to mariners navigating the Erie Canal Lock System.
Cooking and Crafts were her passions, and she organized many craft fairs over the years in Watervliet and Cohoes. She continued these crafts while a resident in Evergreen, donating her artwork to the joy of many staff members.
Varian is survived by her two sons, Terry of Broadalbin, John of East Greenbush, sisters Cathy (Derek) Williams of Potsdam, Julia O'Rourke of Jacksonville, FL, brothers Carroll of Potsdam and Ronald of South Colton, grandchildren Rebecca (Sarah) Senick of Sacramento, CA, Brian Senick of New York City, Christopher (Rachel) Stolicky of Watervliet and many loving cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, sisters Ada and Fay Ruth and brothers Don and John.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a 12 noon Memorial Service on Sunday, May 20th at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet with a calling hour prior to the service from 11AM-12 noon.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1 Penny Lane, Latham, NY 12110, or at www.cancer.org, would be appreciated. Envelopes for contributions will also be available at the funeral home on the day of the service.
