Obituary for Martin E. Cole Jr.

LATHAM – Martin E. Cole, Jr., 102, passed away on Thursday, May 17, 2018 at his home in Latham under the loving care of his family.
Born and educated in Troy, he was the son of the late Martin E. and Laura (McAllister) Cole, Sr. Martin loved telling stories about his childhood and what it was like growing up in Troy in the old days. He was an avid boxing fan and loved watching his NY Yankee games.
Martin was an employee of the D & H Railway, working in the Colonie Yard for 33 years, before his retirement in 1978. He was a US Navy veteran of World War II serving aboard the USS Quick from 1942-1945. He was a former member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks.
He was a longtime member of the Troy YMCA where he spent his youth working out and weightlifting and later taught gymnastics. He was a member of the Board of Directors of the Watervliet Civic Center. Marty could often be found in the weight room and the boxing room teaching proper weightlifting and boxing technique. He also taught both boys and girls gymnastics and use of the trampoline.
Martin is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Helen Stratta Cole; as well as his children, Martin E. (Jo-Ann) Cole, III of Waterford and Lynn A. Cole of Latham; and his grandchildren, Matthew and Jennifer Cole. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call at the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet on Monday from 11 am-12 noon followed by a funeral service at 12 noon. Interment with Navy honors will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet.
