Obituary for Shirley M. Murphy (Mayott)

WATERVLIET – Shirley M. (Mayott) Murphy, 78, died unexpectedly on July 29, 2018. Shirley was born in Cohoes and was the daughter of the late Hadick Mayott and Margaret Mayott Chevalier. She was the widow of Thomas P. Murphy.

Shirley was raised in Watervliet and was a graduate of Watervliet High School. She was employed by Cluett, Peabody and Company as a seamstress and had also worked at the Watervliet Arsenal and for the Albany County Nursing Home as a nurse’s aide. She furthered her education as a beautician and became a self employed hair stylist. Most recently she was employed as a seamstress by UniFirst in Watervliet from where she retired.

Shirley enjoyed camping at Thompson’s Lake and in her retirement years enjoyed spending time with her family.

Shirley was the loving mother of Deborah P. Murphy of Watervliet and the late Patrick T. (late Cathy) Murphy, late Timothy J. (late Cassandra) Murphy, Sr. and late infant James Murphy; sister of Joyce Foreman of Ballston Spa, Sandra French of Clifton Park and Allan Mayotte of Arkansas. Also surviving are 8 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.

Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Friday at 10 am in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Watervliet. Interment will take place in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. Visiting will be held at the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 Third Avenue, Watervliet on Thursday from 4 until 7pm. Donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association in memory of Shirley M. Murphy.
