Obituary for Geraldine Wellworth (Mahar)

WATERVLIET – Geraldine Mahar Wellworth entered into eternal life on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at her home in Watervliet. She was 86 years of age.

Born in Troy, Geraldine was the daughter of Jeremiah and Mabel Elizabeth (Brown) Mahar. By the time she reached the age of four, Geraldine’s parents had both passed away and she was raised, in Watervliet, by her aunts Mamie and Lollie. She was a graduate of Watervliet High School and furthered her education at the Albany Business College.

Geraldine was retired from the First Albany Corporation where she worked as a receptionist for many years.

Geraldine was a faith-filled woman who was very devoted to her Catholic faith. She was a life-long and active parishioner of the former St. Patrick’s Church in Watervliet where she served as a lector and as the religious education coordinator for both St. Patrick’s Church and Sacred Heart of Mary Church. She also taught second grade religious education and each year coordinated the communion class; volunteered at the annual flea market and spaghetti suppers; founded the food pantry with former pastor, the late Rev. Erwin Schweigardt and, along with her daughter Donna, presented the offertory gifts at the last parish Mass before the closing of the church in 2011. She had also served as PTA president for the former School 3 in Watervliet.

In retirement Geraldine enjoyed her family and her home where five generations of her family have resided. She loved to travel and take cruises. She was a communicant of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Watervliet.

Geraldine was pre-deceased by her beloved husband, Thomas G. Wellworth, Sr. and her siblings, Margaret Magilton of Latham, Joan Fox of Troy and infant brother Jeremiah Wellworth.

She is survived by her loving daughter, Donna J. Wellworth of Watervliet; loving son and his wife, Thomas G. (Sheila) Wellworth, Jr. of Bakersfield, CA; her cherished grandchildren, Jeremy, Cassandra, Andrew and Nicholas Wellworth all of Watervliet, Noah, Emily and Kelly Miller all of San Luis Obispo, CA; her precious great-grandchildren, Elliot and Tieg Wellworth.

Geraldine’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 9:15 am from the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway Watervliet and at 10 am in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Church, 25th Street and 7th Avenue, Watervliet. The Rite of Committal and interment will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Watervliet. Friends are invited and may also visit with Geraldine’s family on Tuesday from 4 until 7 pm at the funeral home.
