Obituary for Joan M. Smith

Watervliet – Joan M. Smith, 89, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 12, 2021 at her daughter’s home in Verona, Wisconsin. Born in Kingston, NY, she was the daughter of the late William and Margaret (Conroy) Burns. Joan was the loving wife of Alfred E. Smith for 51 years until his passing in 2006.

Joan was a 1948 graduate of the Academy of St. Ursula in Kingston, NY and would go on to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Science from the Catholic University of America in 1952. An emergency room nurse for most of her career, Joan worked at Leonard Hospital, Samaritan Hospital, and St. Mary’s Hospital in Troy for more than 15 years before her retirement in 1996. She was a very dedicated nurse and was even a co-founder of the Adirondack chapter of the Emergency Nurse’s Association.

Joan was predeceased by her husband, Alfred E. Smith. She is survived by her children, Margaret (Henry) Casey, Barbara (Paul) McHale, Deborah (Howard) Bluver, Alfred E. Smith, Jr., Robert (Tammy) Smith, Katie (Chris) Tso; her grandchildren, Katie Casey, Brian Casey, Matthew Casey, Elizabeth Ostrander, Carly Larkins, Kevin McHale, Jennifer Gentry, David Bluver, Sarah Bluver, Jennifer Thomas, Jessica Smith, Sasha Smith, Alexis Smith, and Jenna Tso; her great-grandchildren Maddy, Will, Tyler, Jack, Avery, Haley, Zack, Brooke, Kaitlyn, Easton and Ellis; and her sister, Catherine (William) DuBois. Joan is also survived by many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, June 19, 2021 at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Troy, with entombment to follow in St. Agnes Mausoleum.
