Obituary for Brian John McCarthy, Sr.

Watervliet, NY – Brian John McCarthy, Sr., age 79, passed into eternal life on Monday, April 19, 2021.

Born in Cohoes on July 29, 1941, he was the son of the late John and Eva (Soroka) McCarthy. He was raised and educated in Green Island and was a graduate of Heatly High School. Following graduation Brian took employment with the Ford Motor Company in Green Island. He was drafted into the Army in 1963 and served overseas returning stateside in 1965 and to his job at the Ford Motor Company where he worked until 1992 when the plant closed. An honorably discharged army veteran, Brian joined the American Legion and was a member of the Legnard Curtin Post #927 in Green Island having served as first vice to the commander from 1990 to 1992 and former commander of the Post Color Guard. Brian enjoyed meeting with a group of his life-long friends, who affectionately referred to themselves as “the Liar’s Club”, at the River Park in Green Island each and every Sunday. Brian enjoyed fishing; spending time with his family and attending as many of his grandchildren’s sporting events and activities as possible. He was a member of the Vagabond Club of Green Island and was an avid NY Giants and Yankees fan.

He was father of Lee McCarthy (wife Andrea); Shelley M. McCarthy (fiancé Gerald L. Wilkinson) and Brian J. McCarthy, Jr.; grandfather of Lee and Erica McCarthy, Jr., Katie and Evan Engel, Ashley E., Ayden C. and Austin F. McCarthy, Joseph M and Joshua L. Johnson; great grandfather of Alexis, LJ, Madelynne, Connor and Gabriella McCarthy, Logan Engel and Jayce R. Johnson; brother of Sharon Kopcza and the late Janice Anderson. Also numerous nieces and nephews survive.

Brian’s family extends a heartfelt thank you to 2 McCauley step down unit and the Intensive Care Unit at St. Peter’s Hospital.

A graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, April 26, 2021 at 10 am in the Gerald B.H. Solomon-Saratoga National Cemetery (Please gather inside the cemetery gate by 9:45 am). Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with Brian’s family on Friday, April 23, 2021 from 5 until 7 pm at the Cummings Funeral Home, 643 Third Avenue, Watervliet, NY (next to Schuyler Bakery).
