Obituary for Joanne Grace Rootes (Messier)

Green Island – Joanne G. Rootes, 75, passed away peacefully on April 23, 2023. Born in Troy, NY on September 10, 1947, she was the daughter of the late Edward and Anne (Dunson) Messier.

Joanne was raised in Green Island and graduated from Heatly High School in 1965 where she was a proud member of the Islanders Green Island Drum and Bugle Corps. She went to work for GE in Waterford at age 18 as a Secretary. She later decided to stay at home to focus on raising her children until she went to work for New York State Dept. of Higher Education, from where she retired in 2012.

She was an avid reader and was a long time member of the Cohoes Public Library. She loved Sudoku, cross word puzzles, and “Words with Friends”. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends at the family campsite at Schroon River as well as family dinners especially when her son-in-law did the cooking. She was fashionably late for every single engagement which made for lots of family laughs.

Joanne was the beloved mother of the late Christopher Dodge, Jodie (Scott) O’Connor, David (Lauren) Hardman, and Daniel Hardman. She was the adored grandmother of John David and Brayden Hardman, Caiden and Ethan Hardman, Christopher and Brady O’Connor; Sister of the late Janice (Richard) Jones, and Mary Ellen (John) Finning. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 AM on Saturday, April 29th at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Watervliet, with interment to follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery. All are invited to visit with Joanne’s family the evening before the service, from 4 to 7 PM on Friday at Bowen and Parker Bros. Funeral Home, Latham. Those who wish to remember Joanne in a special way may consider a donation to the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society, 3 Oakland Ave., Menands, NY 12204.
