Obituary for John F. Decker

WATERVLIET – John F. Decker, 71, passed away on Monday, May 29, 2017 at Saratoga Hospital.

Born in Troy on September 14, 1945, John was the son of the late Joseph C. and Ruth (Bouchard) Decker. He was raised and educated in Watervliet and was a long time resident there. John graduated from Watervliet High School and later furthered his education at Hudson Valley Community College.

John was a professional firefighter and was employed by the City of Watervliet Fire Department from December of 1968 until his retirement in April of 1992. During that time he had also served as president of the Professional Firefighters Union, Local 590. John had also worked simultaneously as a school bus driver for the North Colonie School District for a number of years.

He was a member of the Watervliet Council of the Knights of Columbus, the Friends of Bill W., with his late wife Nancy and the United Church of Cohoes. John was an avid golfer and had formerly served as Caddie Master at Schuyler Meadows Country Club in Loudonville.

He was the beloved husband of the late Nancy V. (Hare) Decker; loving father of Lonnie L. (Hofit) Decker of Greenville, SC, Leah E. (Marlando) Stiles of Chesapeake, VA, John A. Decker of Malta and Victoria Sam; cherished grandfather of Gabrielle and Ethan Decker, Giustina, Alexzander, Ayanna and Alyvia Stiles; brother of Ruth A. (late William) Egan of Latham, Michael J. Decker of Latham and Robert A. (Debra) Decker of Watervliet. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.

A service will be held on Thursday at 11:30 AM in the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet. Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with John’s family on Thursday from 9:30AM until 11:30 AM. Interment will be private.
